I’ve known Natasha for a few years now and she helped me with two projects I created which was a clothing line and internet radio show. She pretty much took me under her wing and mentored me, provided guidance on networking, managing social media, branding, tapping into my creative side and encouraged me to pretty much go after what I want. Here’s a little more about Natasha Nurse. Natasha Nurse is a content creator, coach, co-creator and co-host of WokeNFree. I wanted to have her be part of A Sassy Classy Sophisticated Woman, so I reached out and requested an interview. Natasha, is very informative and full of energy and upbeat.
ASCSW: Hello Natasha, I hope all is well. It has been a while since we chatted. How have you been holding up during this pandemic? I see you on instagram always promoting positive, empowering, uplifting content on Dressing Room 8 which is where I first shared my story a couple of years ago. I also see you promoting your Podcast WokeNFree with your husband Khalil. Congrats on everything. Kudos to you!!!! Yasss darling yasss. LOL. I can’t wait to jump into this interview to catch up.
Natasha: Thank you! Yes, it is an honor to be able to do what you love and I refuse to stop doing that regardless of how upsetting things are in the world. We are living during unprecedented times that are very scary but we all have the opportunity to share our voice to help make this world a better place.
ASCSW: Tell us about your weekly podcast WokeNFree? Explain to the readers the purpose/mission behind it? How did you and your husband come up with the name WokeNFree? Which is a cool name by the way.
Natasha: WokeNFree is a podcast dedicated to those interested in being honest with themselves and the world about hot topics that play a role in everyone’s life. The name combines the concepts of Wokeness and Freedom. To be free and alive in life, my husband and I believe you have to be woke. So, we ALL need to be WokeNFree!
ASCSW: I know you and husband are very close. When I hear of couples doing things like this (having a podcast) together I think it’s cute because there’s nothing like doing something you love and being able to share the experience with your spouse/loved one. What is it like having a podcast with your husband? When you cover certain topics do you give each other a stare and say “oh really, we will be talking about that later?”
Natasha: Thank You! There is nothing better than doing something you love with someone you truly love. We have a great time podcasting and creating content. The show is designed to unapologetically discuss radical and relevant topics. It is VERY interesting having deep conversations where we rarely agree on the topics. We focus on expressing our differing opinions so that we can be the example we want to see in this world. Too often, we see people in the media or on social media incapable of having healthy conversations because they disagree and the conversation turns into something ugly and negative. It’s okay to agree to disagree. We do it all the time!
ASCSW: What type of topics do you talk about?
Natasha: On WokeNFree, no topic is off the table. We discuss relationships, technology, spirituality, theology, music, food, culture, history, media, music, mental health, and so much more.
ASCSW: Where can everyone go to check out your podcast?
ASCSW: Natasha, you’re a very motivating person and I know this from working with you on two of my past projects. You always kept me motivated even during the times I was discouraged? What would you tell people who may have a burning desire to start a podcast but may feel it’s time consuming, think it’s too much work, they’re procrastinating or they may be having other negative thoughts?
Natasha: I appreciate you saying that! Podcasting is NOT EASY. Everyone and their mamma has a podcast, so you really need to focus on why YOU want to start one and how your message will differ from all the other shows already out there. Once you are clear on your WHY, then you can do anything in this world. It is easy to let negative thoughts about anything take over your brain and prevent you from doing what you want. But, that is a choice you are making. The same way we can listen to those negative voices, we can also drown them out with positive thoughts and affirmations. When a person really wants to do something, they go out and do it. They don’t let insecurities or self-doubt stop them. If you want to start a podcast, be determined enough to start it. Commit to the process and don’t stop until your show is live and you are pumping out the episodes. We offer strategy sessions for those interested in starting their own show. People can feel free to reach us HERE.
ASCSW: What do you think is the most challenging about running and maintaining a blog along with a podcast? How do you overcome those challenges?
Natasha: I love being able to use my voice in various mediums. Whether I write an article on my blog or share my voice on the podcast, I am able to live out my purpose as a change agent in this world. What could be better than this? The biggest challenge I face is the same one we all face…time management. Most people do A LOT in this world. That is what it means to be alive. I wake up early so I can have “me time” where I create content, spend time moving my body, and planning for what I want to do in the world. I don’t spend time focusing on the challenges I face. Rather, I focus on what I need to do to be successful for the day!
ASCSW: I also know you very much into content creation and social media. Ugh, you know me I’m not a social media person and you always tried to get me into it but it’s just too much for me with the posting and gathering content. LOL. Whenever someone visits you on Instagram or Facebook they will see quotes and empowering colorful content on your social media sites. How do you come up with the content because I know there’s a strategy for it from using certain colors, messages, posting at certain times, hashtags etc.? What social media techniques could you provide insight on how to produce eye catching content?
Natasha: Yes, I totally hear you. Like anything else in life, your mindset matters the most. If you want to do something, you have to create that intention in your mind and hold on to it as you execute on a daily basis. I have always loved art and look at social media as an opportunity to be a daily digital artist on various social media platforms. Why? The act of creating social media remains interesting and fun the entire time. Yes, it takes work, preparation and skill. But, when you love what you are doing, it is so much easier to do it for the long haul. Here, are some tips I use for social media development and management:
- Define your social media brand and messaging – It needs to be clear what you stand for and why people should be consuming your content
- Create a social media calendar – Everything in life requires planning and strategy…why would social media be any different?
- Use the proper tools – I love to use tools like Postcron, Planoly, Picmonkey, Pexels, and Later – identify the tools you need and use them to make the social media creation and streamline the scheduling process
- Constantly keep learning – No one knows everything…Keep learning and growing with resources like Hubspot Academy or other online courses
- Improve your mindset with daily reading – We are what we consume – fill your brain with positivity and knowledge so the quality of your work continues to improve as often as possible
- Never Give Up – Half the battle to succeeding in life comes down to persistence and determination!
ASCSW: How do you prioritize your time between working, being a wife, blogging, coaching, being a content creator for different businesses, doing speaking engagements, hosting your podcast WokeNFree and book club and then finding time for yourself? Do you have any self care rituals?
Natasha: Life is what you make it. I am able to do a lot of different things…I just don’t need to do them all at once. Creating harmony in your life requires focus, strategy, and determination. I live by my calendar, surround myself with a very tight network of motivated and positive people, and focus on what matters most. If I am not working, then I am resting, consuming content, indulging in media (e.g. tv, movies, etc.), taking care of my health, or learning something new. Having fun, smiling and laughing each day is a big part of the daily self-care I need. It’s easy to love your life if you love yourself, who you spend time with, and what you do.
ASCSW: What are some experiences you have encountered so far during your journey of life that has helped you grow into the woman you are now?
Natasha: What a great question! EVERYTHING!!! We are molded by our experiences, the people around us, and the lessons learned every single day. Some of the most memorable experiences are the ones that taught me how to push past my “limits” in life. Meeting my husband when I was 18 years old at Penn State changed my life. He is my best friend and my #1 fan who helps me be my best self. If you can do your best, then you can leave the rest with the universe!
ASCSW: I know you as being a risk taker, you went to school to become a lawyer but eventually you moved into entrepreneurship which led you into all the things you are doing now, which is amazing and why I admire you. I know you picked up, relocated and just gave yourself a new start with your life. My question is what would you tell women and young girls who feel they don’t have what it takes to begin making the changes in their life they want to see? What would you tell them about self confidence and following through with their goals/dreams?
Natasha: Thank you for the kind words! Yes, I have a nontraditional career that I am deeply proud and grateful for. Just because you start down a road, doesn’t mean you have to stay on that road. I became a lawyer who ventured down a very different path. That is okay! Most people change or reinvent themselves over and over again. Welcome to Adulthood! If a woman is nervous or doubting whether she can change her life, I would ask her the following question:
If you don’t believe in yourself, who will do it for you?
Natasha: The answer is NO ONE. We owe it to ourselves to dream big and we are responsible for making those dreams come true. If you want to change your life, there is NOTHING standing in your way other than YOU. People move across oceans with nothing in their pockets and find a way to make a life for themselves and their family. Moving from New York to Arizona was the BEST life decision my husband and I ever met. We are healthier and happier than we have ever been before. It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks about your life decisions. If you are living for YOU, then you need to do what is best for YOU.
ASCSW: When everything is all said and done what do you want people to remember you for? What legacy do you want to leave behind?
Natasha: I want people to remember me as a dynamic, outspoken, unique activist, and motivational content creator who helped others to live their best lives. My life is unconventional on purpose because I want to show others that they can do whatever they want over and over again. There isn’t one way to live or be happy. That is the legacy I am leaving behind.
ASCSW: What do you think are some of the hardest things about being a woman and why?
Natasha: Women are the creators of life. Human beings wouldn’t be here on this planet without women. Women should be cherished and honored in society. Instead, women are disrespected, killed, and attacked over and over again. The hardest part of being a woman is the same challenge I face as a person of color. When people see me, the first thing they see is that I am black and a woman. Whatever biases or misconceptions they have about black women occupies that person’s mind before they even speak to me. I would like to believe we could get to a point in society where I am seen as Natasha, who also happens to be a woman and a person of color. I am much more than my gender or my race.
ASCSW: What are some of the things you’re doing to help uplift and inspire others?
Natasha: Creating content that helps people think, laugh, and learn on WokeNFree is one of the best ways I can uplift and inspire others. The more positive content that is available in the world, the more negativity gets diminished. Additionally, life choices we make play a role in making this world a better place. Living with a high sense of morality and compassion for others is another way for me to help those around me near and far.
ASCSW: In your opinion what do you think makes you A Sassy Classy Sophisticated Woman? I reached out to you because I know you personally and your vibe have always been encouraging, confident, positive, uplifting, supportive, respectful, professional, fun and vibrant which are all elements in my opinion of being A Sassy Classy Sophisticated Woman? I ask this question because my mission is to have women point out all the positive elements about themselves. We are all Queens however some of us may not recognize our true value/worth during the early stages of our journey, we could be in situations where we lose sight of who we are to please others or possibly we just don’t know at all. I want to encourage women/young girls to start speaking positive affirmations about themselves.
Natasha: Thank you Nina for empowering and motivating me with your dedication for uplifting women through this amazing platform. I am a sassy classy sophisticated woman for the following reasons:
- I refuse to allow anyone or anything stand in the way of designing the life I want
- I stand up for myself and others no matter what
- I believe in my beliefs and who I am as a person
- I refuse to entertain negative people or beliefs in my life
- I live with purpose unapologetically
- I am dedicated to changing this world each and every day
- I am grateful and proud to be a beautiful black queen
ASCSW: Last question. What would you want the readers to take away after reading your interview/story on ASCSW?
Natasha: I want the readers to take away the following from my story:
- Everything in life is a choice – make the choices you can ultimately live with
- Who you surround yourself will change your life for the better or worse
- Fearless living is the only way to live
- You can be your #1 advocate or your own worst enemy
- If you have a message to share with the world, it is up to you to share it
- Life is too short not to go after your dreams
- The best things in life require strategy, preparation, and determination
- Do the best you can and leave the rest with the universe!
